Q: "How do I make Excel's outline symbol (the little plus/minus button for grouping rows) appear ABOVE the rows I'm grouping, instead of BELOW?"

A: Omg, I've been wanting this for twenty years!
  1. Click the little down-and-right arrow in the DATA ribbon's "Outline" section,
  2. activate the checkbox that says "Summary rows below detail", and
  3. click the OK button:

Note that this can also be used analogously for grouping columns. Heewack!

Also handy: if the plus/minus buttons aren't showing up on your spreadsheet, go to the "Advanced" tab in the "File | Options" dialog and see if the checkbox "Show outline symbols if an outline is applied" is active. This option is worksheet-specific.
